Born on February 14, 1957, to Robert and Margaret Stinson, Bill was the eldest of three siblings. He grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from North Central High School in 1975, where he was an accomplished track and field athlete. His athletic talent earned him a scholarship to Butler University, where he majored in business administration and graduated with honors in 1979. At Butler, Bill served as president of the Sigma Chi fraternity and volunteered extensively with local shelters, setting the stage for his lifelong commitment to community service. His contributions were later recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Leadership from Butler University in 2015.
A Family Man and Community Leader
In June 1980, Bill married Maria Lopez, and together, they built a life centered around love, mutual respect, and shared values. Their 45-year marriage was a model of enduring partnership. Bill and Maria raised two children, Christopher and Rebecca, and cherished five grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy, and his legacy continues through them.
Beyond his role as a devoted husband and father, Bill was a beloved figure in the Indianapolis community. He was a co-founder of Stinson Home Furnishings, a family-run woodworking and cabinetry business that became a cornerstone of the local small-business community. Over four decades, Bill mentored countless apprentices, many of whom went on to establish their own successful careers.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
Bill’s contributions extended far beyond his business. He served on the board of Indianapolis Habitat for Humanity for 15 years, where he played an instrumental role in providing affordable housing to those in need. As a member of the Rotary Club of Indianapolis, Bill led fundraising efforts to support youth literacy and education. His role as a youth soccer coach at Riverside Park earned him the affectionate nickname “Coach Stinson” from families in the community.

Bill was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing on Lake Monroe, camping with his grandchildren, and tending to his beloved rose garden. A passionate Indianapolis Colts fan, he made annual trips to Lucas Oil Stadium a cherished tradition. Bill also shared his love of woodworking with his grandchildren, teaching them how to build birdhouses and model boats on weekends. His daughter, Rebecca, reflected on his legacy, saying, “Dad taught me that hard work and kindness go hand in hand.”

Bill is survived by his wife Maria, children Christopher (Emily) and Rebecca (Daniel), grandchildren Sofia, Lucas, Olivia, Ethan, and Harper, and siblings Susan Miller and Thomas Stinson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Patricia.
Visitation and Funeral Services
Visitation will take place on Sunday, April 27, from 2–6 p.m. at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home in Indianapolis. The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 28, at 10 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, followed by burial at Crown Hill Cemetery and a reception at the West Pavilion.
